Aedas' Twisting Tower: A Dance of Light and Form

Chongqing Gaoke Group Ltd's Office Tower: A New Icon of Architectural Innovation

Aedas, a global leader in architectural design, has created an architectural masterpiece for Chongqing Gaoke Group Ltd. The design, inspired by the mesmerizing dance of the aurora, features a unique façade design that connects the northern and eastern sides of the building from bottom to top. This 'dance of light' is characterized by the juxtaposition of rectilinear forms and tower façades with double curves, creating a visually stunning spectacle.

Standing tall at 201M, the office tower boasts a double-curved façade, a distinctive feature that places it among the "Most Twisting Towers in the World". This unique twisting results in a high double-curvature ratio, posing a significant challenge for the overall façade system. To overcome this, Aedas and RFR leveraged the cold bend glass technique and Building Information Modeling (BIM) on complex geometry façade for a groundbreaking solution.

The design uses double-curved cold form glass instead of the usual faceted method to achieve a smooth transition of the glass façade. The maximum twisting angle is up to 8.8 degrees per floor, surpassing the existing super high-rise tower in the world by nearly 1.5 times. This system enables a maximum of 86mm in glass deviation between floors, realizing a record-breaking design in China.

Completed in 2022 in Chongqing, China, the project is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the design team, led by Ken Wai, Global Design Principal. The design has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2023, granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.
